Founder's Message

Dr. Nita Diwan

Founder & Director, Unmish
Thirty years ago, I became a mother to my son, Nikunj. He was later diagnosed with non-verbal autism, limb girdle muscular dystrophy, severe epilepsy disorder, among other things. In those early years, I remember walking into doctors' clinics — sometimes confused, sometimes scared, always desperate to know what I could do for him.
"Unmish was born out of that journey — out of a mother's determination to create the place she wished had existed for her own child."
Today, Unmish is Kolkata's only centre that offers the most advanced, comprehensive neuro-rehabilitation under one roof — school, therapy, and vocational training — all integrated, all child-first. We don't just look at a diagnosis; we look at the child, their potential, and the life they can lead.
Our multidisciplinary team — physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech, psychology, special education, play and music therapy — works together as one unit. Every therapist knows what the others are doing. Every plan is tailored. Every step is backed by the science of neuroplasticity — the brain's incredible ability to change.

At Unmish, we also go beyond childhood. Our adult vocational unit creates employment for our grown-up students. Our financial support programs ensure that children from EWS and BPL families get the same quality of care as anyone else.
Because beyond therapy, beyond education, beyond even independence — our bigger purpose is to build a society where children and adults with special needs are respected, included, and valued for who they are.
